Psalm 115:14-15 - November 7, 2009

Ps 115:14-15 May the LORD make you increase, both you and your children. 15 May you be blessed by the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. NIV

Psalm 115:14-15 is a simple blessing that each one of us would be greatly benefited to learn the power of. As Christians it is important that we understand more fully the verse in Prov 18:21 that tells us “The tongue has the power of life and death,” When we speak we are either building up or tearing down, planting seeds of life or speaking death. Throughout the ministry of Jesus he demonstrated both dimensions of this proverb as he spoke life into people’s broken bodies and souls and on one occasion spoke death over the fig tree, causing it to wither and die by the power of just His words.
Many times throughout the pages of scripture there are tremendous examples presented of a spoken or written blessing being sent forth over the lives of others in the name of the Lord. These simple yet powerful words operate with the same creative life force as the preached word and prophetic ministry. This passage in verses 14-15 of Psalm 115 is a great example of the simple act of speaking life! “May the Lord make you increase…” is such a simple and yet powerful blessing that fills the heart of the hearer with faith. It is so encompassing in its scope as it does not define the areas of increase but leaves room for a faith application in every area of life; increased finances, increased health, increased friendships, increase influence, increase, increase, increase! With God there is abundance and multiplication!
Consider for a moment the grace upon the heart that can speak this blessing over the lives of others. Many people operate in a spirit of poverty not only in regard to themselves, but in regard to others. When others are blessed they feel threatened by their success or suddenly feel jealous or bad about themselves because it was not them. The ability to bless others makes a statement about the condition of our own hearts. When I can bless you it is because I am not worried about me! When I can believe God for blessing over you it is because I have found contentment in what the Lord has done for me! Blessing others is one of the more powerful statements of trust in God personally that I can make! As an act of faith today speak blessing over others with no regard to your own personal state and your heart will grow in grace and confidence before God.

Psalm 112:5-8 - November 6, 2009

Ps 112:5-8 Good will come to him who is generous and lends freely, who conducts his affairs with justice. 6 Surely he will never be shaken; a righteous man will be remembered forever. 7 He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. 8 His heart is secure, he will have no fear; in the end he will look in triumph on his foes. NIV

How we live our lives has a great impact upon the state of our hearts. In the preceding devotional we considered the stability and blessing that come to a life that has learned to give generously and trust in the Lord’s provision. But material blessing and stable circumstances are not the only benefits of this just and trusting heart. Imagine a life that is free from the fear of bad news!! Most people live with an undercurrent of anxiety over the possibility that some misfortune is just around the corner. Many have tasted enough difficulties in life that they lived poised for the next blow, never fully relaxing into a place of rest. This doesn’t have to be. Psalm 112:5-8 provides us the assurance that if we have learned to walk justly in life and give generously to others we can enter a place of rest and peace.
The fact that we have no fear of bad news does not mean that bad news will never come. What this passage teaches us is that when we live with a generous heart and treat others fairly, we can rest knowing that if a time of hardship comes to touch our lives we will reap what we have sown in how others treat us with generosity and compassion during our times of need. Knowing we have sowed good seed in life enables us to rest in the knowledge that we will reap this same grace from the Lord through others and so we can have a heart that is not shaken by the storms of life.
Verse eight holds within it a comforting affirmation of what happens to this life: a secure heart, freedom from fear and final victory! Note that we are not told that there will be no battles. Notice that we are not told that there will never be a conflict in which we suffer loss. The great source of peace and comfort in this passage is the knowledge that in the end we will “look in triumph” on our foes. The final outcome of God’s dealings is a blessed life! Rest in that knowledge and live with generosity as you treat others justly and the fruit of this will be final victory in the outcome of your life!

Hearing the Voice of God - November 5, 2009

Today, you are able to enjoy another passage from Pastor Dan's new Study Guide "A Revelation Generation"

Does God speak today?

The answer to this question is a resounding yes! The ability to hear God’s voice rests clearly upon the foundational issue of personal relationship with God through a saving experience with Jesus Christ, by faith in His work on the cross.

John 3:5-6 “Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.” NIV

We must believe that He is, and that He rewards those who diligently seek him.

Heb 11:6 “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” NIV

Our primary source of the voice of God is the Word of God. We must believe that the bible is the authoritative, inerrant word of God because this is the starting place for discerning the voice and thoughts of God. The scriptures are the measuring rod of every revelation, every spiritual experience and every word and deed of the believer.

· The Word is alive,

John 6:63 “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.” NIV

· The Word is active & powerful

Heb 4:12 “For the word of God is living and active . Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” NIV

· It bears witness to itself

2 Tim 3:16-17 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” NIV

· History bears witness to it.

· The spirit within us bears witness to it as we come to know Christ. Our minds must be renewed by the word of God.

Rom 8:16 “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.” NIV

Rom 12:1-2 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God-this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.” NIV

There are some statements of scripture that are written in the context of the culture of the day but the spirit or principle of the passage is authoritative. (Example: The commentary throughout portions of the Bible that speak about slavery are not God endorsing slavery but rather the teaching of spiritual principles but conveyed within the context of the world’s culture at that period in human history.)

Once the authority of the written word is established in our hearts understanding of the way God uses the word to us is the essential necessity for hearing the voice of God with clarity and life changing impact.

In the scriptures there are two key Greek words used to establish the understanding of the distinctly different facets of the Word of God. These two words are “Logos” and “Rhema”.

In simplest terms the Logos of God is the written word of God and the Rhema of God is the revealed word of God that comes by God’s Spirit illuminating something to you personally.

This is that word of God that God causes to come alive to our hearts. This is that word that reaches beyond our intellectual ascent and inspires faith. Ro.10:17

Psalm 112:5-6 - November 4, 2009

Ps 112:5-6 "Good will come to him who is generous and lends freely, who conducts his affairs with justice. 6 Surely he will never be shaken; a righteous man will be remembered forever. NIV"

Do you want a life that cannot be shaken? Do you want the goodness of God to follow you? Your own actions determine the measure that is poured back over your own life. If we choose to walk in a generosity that is the fruit of confidence in God as our source of supply then we activate the principles of God in our life! The word places a sure promise over us that good will come to those who conduct their affairs rightly. Stability is the fruit of living with faith and generosity. Many people live in the fear of lack rather than in the faith of God’s promised blessing. As a result of this fear driven approach to life they actually become the source of their own poverty or the ceiling to the measure of God’s intended blessing.
Some people who were actually intended to walk in great wealth and were given gifts and talents that were intended to produce incredible wealth are limited in the harvest that comes to their lives without even knowing it. They look upon the riches they possess with satisfaction not ever realizing that had they lived in a spirit of faith and generosity rather than a spirit of miserly fear they would have been able to sow twice as much seed and still live in even more personal abundance. Jesus states the principle so clearly in Luke 6:38 “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." NIV The simple principle is this” God responds to the measure you use! If you live in fear and a mindset of lack you stop the flow of increase. If you live giving freely and generously to the needs of those around you, you activate the principles of God and will find your life overflowing with more than you can imagine!
Consider this: God wants to bless you more than you are longing to be blessed. So often it is our fear and wrong understanding of sowing and reaping that is the limit to our harvest. We can point to God and say “why did I know see more fruit?” But at the end of the day many times our own limits become God’s limits. In 2 Kings 13 the prophet was angry with the king because in his lack of faith and passion he only struck the ground 3 times in response to the promise of God. As a result he only received a partial victory. The prophet stated that had he believed with a whole heart and struck the ground more vigorously his victory would have been lasting. Sow passionately, sow fully, sow generously. Seek for opportunities to plant seed for your future! For every measure there is a measure that is even greater still that can only be accessed when we stretch our faith and apply the principles of the kingdom generously!

Psalm 112:1-4 - November 3, 2009

Ps 112:1-4 "Praise the LORD. Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who finds great delight in his commands. 2 His children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. 3 Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. 4 Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man." NIV

Do you really love the Word of God? Do you consistently respect the Lord and His standards for your life? Do habitually consider His will in the decisions that you make for your life? Then blessing is on the way! Psalm 112:1-4 is a celebration of the blessings that follow a man who fears the Lord!!!!!!
This passage lifts high the glory of living uprightly before the Lord and calls us to consider the rewards that follow a life that is surrendered to God. Psalm 112 begins by appealing to our parental nature and the natural desire that is in most parents to see their children excel in life! Verse 2 gives us great hope as we consider the promise that the children of those who fear the Lord and love His word will be mighty in the land. This verse sends us a powerful message. It is the life of the parents that determines to a large degree the future of the children. If we live uprightly and honor the Lord and His word the fruit of that lifestyle is that our children are directed into a path of blessing and strength.
The promise of the Lord is that our children will be blessed with strong footing in life if we as parents live in the consistent fear of the Lord AND place the word of God as central to our family values system. Many people honor the Lord in general principle but are not diligent to place the word deep into the heart of how we raise our families and live our lives. That is like having great soil with no seed in it. It is the word of God that has the powerful seeds of life in it that grows up to produce Godly fruit in a person’s future! God has clearly promised that the lineage of the righteous is blessing!
One of the wonderful attributes of this passage of scripture is that it does not stop with a general concept of blessing it carries on to some very potent definition of a life blessed by God. Verses 3 & 4 provide a context for the blessing of God that adds to our faith, hope and expectation of God! God has promised that wealth and riches will be in the lives of the children who are raised by parents who fear the Lord and love His word. A powerful principle is revealed in this simple passage. The principles of sowing and reaping in the kingdom of God increase dramatically from one generation to another. When a child is raised in the word and way of God they are beginning with the blessing that we had to fight for. Imagine Solomon. He started where David left off. David spent his life as a man of war fighting for the blessing of God to come to him and to Israel. Solomon stepped into that blessing and advanced the blessing of God on the nation to a whole different level of increase. He was known as the richest and wisest man in the Word. This is because of the starting point that he was given because of his father’s commitment. It is also worth considering that the one character flaw of sexual sin that was present in a small way with David was also greatly multiplied in the life of Solomon as he had such a multitude of wives and concubines.
There is great power in what we sow into the lives of our children for good or evil and this passage reminds us of the plan and promise of God. It is God’s desire to bless and consistently increase the measure of that blessing in every family from generation to generation and this promise is sure if we will be consistent in placing the word of God and the fear of the Lord at the center of our family lifestyles.

Last week, we spent a few days exploring the realm of dreams. Please enjoy This passage from Pastor Dan's new study guide "A Revelation Generation":

Symbolic Language, Parables and Other Forms of Spiritual Revelation in Dreams, Visions and Trances

From the earliest days of scripture God has been speaking through dreams, visions and trances. As Joel 2 says, in the last days God will increase the frequency of these things in the earth. Because of this it will be necessary to increase our skill in handling revelation of this nature.

Joel 2:28-29 "And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.” NIV

This section of teaching is by no means comprehensive but is simply an introduction to some of the main elements in these areas of spiritual life.

• Jeremiah was schooled by the Lord in the process of development as a prophetic person. In Jeremiah 1 Jeremiah developed his understanding through a series of lessons from the Lord in as God taught Jeremiah concerning His voice. It is in this process of development that we can clearly see three stages of handling revelation

o Revelation – What is it that you saw or heard?
o Interpretation – What did these things mean?
o Application – What does the Lord want me to do with this information?

• The life of Jesus reveals the whole nature of symbolic language. The stories that Jesus used to teach principles were often times symbolic stories where the people and images used were actually figurative of something or someone else.

• The three primary arenas where revelation of this nature occurs are:

o Dreams = Joseph had a dream warning him to take Jesus and Mary to Egypt. Daniel had dreams about the end times. Dreams are the language of our sleep.

o Visions = Visions can occur either in prayer or as we are going. A vision that comes during prayer is most often seen through the eyes of the Spirit while we have our natural eyes closed. A vision seen while we are out doing things is most often received as either an impression or an open vision where we see into both the natural realm and the spiritual realm at the same time. In extreme cases a vision of greater intensity can come that will override what we are doing in the natural such as Paul’s experience on the road to Damascus in Acts 2

o Trances = Trances are most often occurring while in prayer and are similar to sleep but are a spiritual state where we enter the spiritual realm with our spirit. A detachment from the natural state of consciousness occurs where the individual is not sleeping but rather drawn into the spirit realm while still awake as in Acts 10.

Types of communication in dreams and visions:

• Numbers
• Symbolic images
• Literal images
• Angelic Instruction/Invitation
• Angelic and/or Holy Spirit escort to spiritual places
• Sentences in the night
• Riddles, or dark sayings
• The word of the Lord comes

Sources of dreams

• God
• Ourselves. Job speaks of the cares of life causing dreams
• The enemy. Demonic interference

The issue of perplexity

Peter and Daniel were both perplexed after the spiritual encounters that they had experienced. We must settle the issue that God speaks in ways that perplex us and require us to search out understanding from Him. Daniel was actually sick for days after one of his visitation experiences.

Areas That Cause Perplexity

• The images that we see
• The timing of the revelation’s fulfillment or intended message
• The unremembered dream (I believe that many times this is God sowing into your spirit)
• Revelations that are locked up until an appointed time such as in Daniel and Rev. 5

Purposes of Revelation
0 Personal Edification
0 A restored spiritual truth
0 A psychological revelation – insight into an area of brokenness in yourself; a personality flaw or a personal sin.
0 Personal guidance for the future
0 Direction
0 Warning
0 Ministry to others
o Information to guide intercession
o Information to release ministry
0 Personal prayer ministry
0 A prophetic word or counsel
0 Prophetic evangelism
0 Corporate Revelation
o Guidance for the local body
0 Direction
0 Intercession
o Revelation for the body of Christ in a region, nation, etc

Some categories of symbols:

• Biblical Symbols = Those symbols where a pattern is set for the interpretation of the symbol through the scriptures.

• Cultural Symbols = God will at times choose symbols that are general to most people in a given culture that is current for today; modern symbols rather than historic
• Personal Symbols = God will also use images that are directly relevant to the individual and relate to meaningful things in that person’s individual history that speaks directly to some point of identification.

Psalm 111:10 - November 1, 2009

Ps 111:10 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise. NIV"

This passage is the central theme to a life of wisdom. Do you truly desire to make wise choices? Do you long to be spared the pain creating by making significant mistakes in crucial life decisions that affect your life and the lives of others? Psalm 111:10 shows us the foundation of all wisdom; the fear of the Lord. This is not a complex principle, nor is it difficult to understand and yet so many people overlook this simple truth in their decision making and in the counsel that they give to others.
This passage needs no long explanation but is plainly seen for what it is. To walk in the fear of the Lord is simply this: IN EVERY CHOICE, EVERY ACTION, EVERY WORD, EVERY DEED, CONSIDER ONE QUESTION BEFORE GOING ANY FURTHER IN THE PROCESS “HOW DOES GOD FEEL ABOUT THIS MATTER? Is this choice or action offensive to Him? Does it agree with the counsels of scripture where God reveals His heart and His ways to us?” This is what it is to fear the Lord. So many wrong decisions can be avoided simply by adding God to the process. If an area of consideration passes the scrutiny of the word and ways of God then we can move beyond that to further evaluation of the matter and know as we do that the matter has a good foundation from which to look at the remaining practical considerations relevant to it. Every matter should begin with God!!!!!
