Psalm 115:14-15 - November 7, 2009

Ps 115:14-15 May the LORD make you increase, both you and your children. 15 May you be blessed by the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. NIV

Psalm 115:14-15 is a simple blessing that each one of us would be greatly benefited to learn the power of. As Christians it is important that we understand more fully the verse in Prov 18:21 that tells us “The tongue has the power of life and death,” When we speak we are either building up or tearing down, planting seeds of life or speaking death. Throughout the ministry of Jesus he demonstrated both dimensions of this proverb as he spoke life into people’s broken bodies and souls and on one occasion spoke death over the fig tree, causing it to wither and die by the power of just His words.
Many times throughout the pages of scripture there are tremendous examples presented of a spoken or written blessing being sent forth over the lives of others in the name of the Lord. These simple yet powerful words operate with the same creative life force as the preached word and prophetic ministry. This passage in verses 14-15 of Psalm 115 is a great example of the simple act of speaking life! “May the Lord make you increase…” is such a simple and yet powerful blessing that fills the heart of the hearer with faith. It is so encompassing in its scope as it does not define the areas of increase but leaves room for a faith application in every area of life; increased finances, increased health, increased friendships, increase influence, increase, increase, increase! With God there is abundance and multiplication!
Consider for a moment the grace upon the heart that can speak this blessing over the lives of others. Many people operate in a spirit of poverty not only in regard to themselves, but in regard to others. When others are blessed they feel threatened by their success or suddenly feel jealous or bad about themselves because it was not them. The ability to bless others makes a statement about the condition of our own hearts. When I can bless you it is because I am not worried about me! When I can believe God for blessing over you it is because I have found contentment in what the Lord has done for me! Blessing others is one of the more powerful statements of trust in God personally that I can make! As an act of faith today speak blessing over others with no regard to your own personal state and your heart will grow in grace and confidence before God.
